In 2014, Jonas Bendiksen embarked on a series of photographs chronicling seven men who claim to be the biblical Messiah.

Some have thousands of followers, others are true underdogs, with only a handful of disciples.

In contrast to oral stories and parchment scrolls, Bendiksen’s Messiahs communicate their revelations on Facebook and viral YouTube videos.  Each believes they are the chosen one, come to save the world.

Here, INRI Cristo is wheeled around their compound on a rolling pedestal. INRI are the initials that Pontius Pilate had written on top of Jesus’ cross, meaning Jesus Christ, King of the Jews. Brazil, 2014.
